Awakening to a Ghost

We have cats and dogs but the cats sleep outside unless the weather is bad. One of them slept in last night and at 4 am my husband nudged me and said the cat is at the door meowing.
I opened the bedroom door and there she was so I said "Oh honey, I will put you outside." As I was walking down the stairs I noticed that our huge dog who is part wolf was agitated and wanted to go out as well. So out back they both went.
I stood outside for a while but it got chilly so I went back inside while the pets roamed. As I was standing by the door I heard what sounded like someone hammering in the kitchen....I quickly moved into the kitchen and the noise abruptly stopped. As soon as I went to the back door again the noise resumed. I ran out the back door to get my guard dog...he would not come into the house. He would not budge.
I was cold and so crossed over into the house again and boom the noise resumed itself. I am a very rational person and my second thought was that it sounded like a heavy branch banging on a window....we have no branches even near a window. I started to get nervous now...went back towards the kitchen and the noise vanished.
I ran to the garage to get the dog's collar and leash and brought him back in the house. Then I went upstairs where my husband was sleeping. I said to myself...I must be tired and it is Friday the 13th...
Next morning, my mother in law asked me what that banging sound was at 4.30 in the morning. She reported hearing multiple voices and banging. That confirmed it for me...the only other person in the house was my husband who had fallen back to sleep and had not heard a thing.
This house was built in the 1800's and was once used as a Speakeasy....it is big and there have been several unexplained events mostly involving electrical appliances and lights going on and off. The fan turns on and off as well...
I often wake up and hear voices but I block them out as it scares me......my husband has had strange encounters as well and he is a man of science. Nobody can sleep alone in this house...you feel like you are being watched.
